(ii)I will use “Finkel” throughout except for explicit references to August Finckle. “Finckle” was the spelling used by the man we now know as Finkel when he married for the first time. But late nineteenth century records show that the spelling eventually stabilized as “Finkel.” This kind of orthographic instability is not unusual for the time.
